Beyond Medication: A Holistic Approach to Conquering Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are common mental health conditions that affect tens of millions of adults across the United States. While medication is effective for many, there's more to treatment than just getting a prescription.

Venice Sanchez, MD, and our team at Sydea Medical Practice take a holistic approach to anxiety and depression care. Beyond traditional medications, we offer evidence-based therapies and strategies to support your mental and emotional well-being.

Want to improve how you feel and function day-to-day, with or without medication? Let’s take a closer look at some of your options.

Talk therapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, lets you explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a structured environment. Your therapist guides the conversation, helping you recognize patterns and triggers, and introduces new ways to work through difficult situations.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one common approach for treating anxiety and depression. It focuses on identifying unhelpful thought and behavior patterns and replacing them with healthier, more constructive ones.

Regular exercise

Regular physical activity can ease anxiety by reducing muscle tension and regulating your stress response. It may also promote changes in the brain that support mood and emotional regulation.

You don’t need to spend hours at the gym. Any type of consistent movement can have a positive effect on your mental health, especially when you’re doing something you enjoy; whether it’s hiking, swimming, dancing, or gardening.

Balanced nutrition

Your gut and brain are closely connected, which is why what you eat can affect how you feel. A balanced diet provides the nutrients your body needs to produce and regulate neurotransmitters that influence mood and stress.

When it comes to your diet, focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Try to limit processed foods and those with added sugars. If you’re dealing with anxiety, cutting back on caffeine may help with symptoms like restlessness or nervousness.

Healthy sleep habits

Anxiety and depression can interfere with the quantity and quality of your sleep. At the same time, a lack of restful sleep can worsen mood, concentration, and emotional regulation.

You can’t always control how easily you fall or stay asleep, but healthy sleep habits can help reset your sleep-wake cycle. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, giving yourself screen-free time to unwind before bed, and keeping your bedroom cool and dark.

Mindfulness and stress management

Mindfulness involves bringing your attention to the present moment rather than getting caught up in worries about the future or negative thoughts about the past. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and grounding exercises can help interrupt patterns of worry or rumination.

Pay attention to recurring stressors and, where possible, set boundaries that protect your time and energy. Taking a few moments each day to unwind with a calming activity or hobby can help prevent tension from building up and exacerbating symptoms.

Don’t brush off symptoms of anxiety and depression. You have options, and our team is here to help you explore them. To schedule an appointment at Sydea Medical Practice, call our office in Irvine, California, or book online.
